Sometimes, the best way to capture prey is to have it fall into your hands. The venator specializes in this methodology, and prefers to position their enemies carefully into well-placed ambushes as opposed to rushing them down.

Blended Training

Whenever a venator would gain a skill talent from their class levels, they may instead choose to gain a combat talent. A venator uses their operative modifier as their practitioner ability modifier. [Utility] talents cannot be used to gain combat talents unless they have the [utility] tag (which can be introduced using the variant rule).

This alters skill expertise.

Trapper

The venator gains the Navigation sphere and the Trap sphere as bonus spheres at 1st level.

This replaces survivalist.

Herding Rush

At 3rd level, whenever the venator would make an attack of opportunity provoked by an enemy's movement, they can instead expend the attack of opportunity and move up to half their speed before the provoking creature completes their movement (but after the creature leaves the provoking square). If this movement is contained within an area of their pathing, they can instead move their full speed.

This movement does not provoke attacks of opportunity from the provoking creature, and may only be used against an individual creature once per round. Once the venator completes this movement, the enemy must succeed at a Will saving throw (DC 10 + 1/2 their courser level + their operative modifier) or be forced to move in a different direction to the venator. This is a mind-affecting fear effect.

This ability otherwise is treated as the determined stalker ability for ventures and class features that augment it.

At 8th level, the venator can still attempt the attack of opportunity against the provoking creature before they move, although they only move half the normal amount. If the attack damages the creature, the venator can expend their martial focus to either bypass any immunity to mind-affecting or fear effects they possess, or force the enemy to roll their Will saving throw against the herding rush ability twice, taking the worst result.

This replaces determined stalker, and alters opportune stalker and tenacious stalker.

Harrying Traps

At 4th level, the venator cannot make their own harrying assault. Instead, whenever the venator places a trap, they can choose a harrying assault option to apply to it. When a creature is damaged by (or fails its save against) the trap, they are also subject to the chosen harrying assault option.

This alters harrying assault.

Violent Herding

At 8th level, whenever the venator uses herding rush, they can still attempt the attack of opportunity against the provoking creature before they move, although they only move half the normal amount. If the attack damages the creature, the venator can expend their martial focus to either bypass any immunity to mind-affecting or fear effects they possess, or force the enemy to roll their Will saving throw against the herding rush ability twice, taking the worst result.

This replaces fleeting blow.

Tandem Harry

At 9th level, whenever one of the venator’s traps are triggered, they can spend an immediate action to make a single weapon attack against the creature that triggered the trap (as long as they are within reach or range).

On a successful hit, the venator can apply a harrying assault option to the damaged creature–if the triggered trap already subjected the creature to harrying assault, the venator must choose a different option.

This replaces deadly assault.
