Revolutionary (Kingking)

Revolutionary
The voice of the people, the first line of the grand efforts to throw off the yolks of a tyrant’s oppression, or to unite the oligarchs and powerful in union with the support of the working people. The revolutionary’s bell rings, once when it begins, twice when it surmounts all odds to become law, and forevermore when given a seat at the tables once reserved for kings.
Requirements:
- Special: The character is a respected and recognized leader, figurehead, or major organizer (subject to GM discretion, see the movement class feature).
This replaces the prerequisite to the kingking class prerequisite of a rightful rule over a kingdom.
People’s Will (Ex): At 1st level, the kingking’s alignment becomes populist (see Alignment Axis: Monarchism vs. Populism later in this book).
The revolutionary gains ranks in Knowledge (local) and Knowledge (local) is always a class skill instead of Knowledge (nobility). Abilities which use Knowledge (nobility) to determine their effectiveness or saving throw DC use Knowledge (local) in place of Knowledge (nobility). Instead of a nobility ability modifier, the revolutionary uses a “revolution modifier”, which otherwise functions as the revolutionary’s nobility ability modifier for all purposes.
Other features may be referred to or framed as being part of a republic, democracy, people’s movement, or other similar person-forward organization, rather than the monarchist lens the prestige class places them. For example, instead of courtiers, it may be the revolutionary’s confidants or cabinet, and so on.
This alters nobility.
Movement (Ex): Instead of a realm, the revolutionary is the, or one of the, recognized and respected leaders, figureheads, or major organizers of a major movement, ideology, or populist country. By GM discretion, this may also be a sufficiently knit-together faction or resistance group, a group or ideology which is actively working against another established organization, an ideology (or even religion) being spread and adopted by wide numbers of people, or even a successful populist country (and other similar such groups), and other similar such ideas (subject to GM discretion).
Whenever a kingking ability would refer to their realm, it instead applies to the revolutionary’s movement–the revolutionary’s movement includes the spaces, places, lands, and buildings controlled and operated by the revolutionary’s people (subject to GM discretion).
The revolutionary’s movement often overlaps with an established government (if an active revolution or movement against an existing government), although it may represent the post-revolution government and control over the lands this new governing body controls. As such, the revolutionary’s movement may be contiguous groups, or non-contiguous pockets of those loyal to the movement.
Realm abilities which would apply to the revolutionary’s realm, or the people within their realm, now apply to anyone that is part of the revolutionary’s movement, or benefitting from the resources and hospitality of their movement.
Special – Kingdom Building (Ultimate Campaign): The revolutionary may or may not maintain control of a region due to the nature of their movement. A revolutionary not in control of their region does not prevent the revolutionary from benefiting from their hexes controlled by their movement (as though it were a kingdom hex under their management and control). This does require that there is a sufficient presence of the revolutionary’s people and that they have sufficient autonomy in that hex.
GMs and player-controlled revolutionaries are encouraged to work together when determining the scope of the revolutionary’s movement. Oftentimes, a movement is a short-lived ideological wave which, if it fails to succeed and take hold, causes the revolutionary to fade into the background as well. If the revolutionary is representing an ongoing movement or resistance, and not an established governing body, the GM and player revolutionary should discuss the goals and ideologies of the movement. A revolutionary whose movement has succeeded and controls an established country may otherwise operate normally as a full-fledged country.
This alters king’s realm.
Ex-Revolutionary: Just like an ex-kingking, an ex-revolutionary has either become a non-populist, has lost the respect and recognition as the leader, figurehead, or major organizer of their political movement or ideology and can no longer make official decisions in that capacity, or their movement has been quashed or no longer exists.
